What Is a t.me Link?

t.me links are Telegram's official short-link format for opening the app directly to a specific user, bot, channel, or group. When clicked on mobile, the Telegram app opens immediately to the correct conversation. On desktop, it loads in the Telegram desktop app or Web client.

Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram allows you to link by either a @username or a phone number. Username-based links are public - anyone with the URL can initiate a conversation. Phone-number-based links are limited to contacts who have mutual phone contacts permission enabled.

Username vs. Phone Number Links

  • By Username (recommended for businesses): Format: t.me/yourusername. Anyone can click this and start a chat, regardless of whether they have your number. Set a public @username in your Telegram Settings to enable this.
  • By Phone Number: Format: t.me/+15551234567. This opens a chat with the phone number only if the recipient has allowed non-contacts to message them. For phone-number links to work, the recipient's privacy settings for 'Who can find me by my phone number' must be set to 'Everybody' in Telegram.

Best Use Cases for Telegram Links

  • Customer Support: Link your Telegram username on your website as an instant support channel - particularly effective for tech-savvy audiences and crypto/fintech communities where Telegram is the dominant communication channel.
  • Community Building: Share your Telegram channel or group invite link (e.g., t.me/+AbCdEfGh123) in newsletters and social posts to grow your community. Note that group invite links using the t.me/+ prefix followed by an alphanumeric hash are direct secure invite links, whereas t.me/+ followed by digits is a direct phone-number link.
  • Bot Integrations: Link directly to your Telegram bot (t.me/yourbotname) from a website or email to let users immediately start interacting with your automation.
  • E-commerce & DTC Brands: Offer Telegram as an alternative to email or WhatsApp for order updates and customer communication, especially in Eastern Europe and the Middle East where Telegram has very high penetration.

Pre-filled Message

Add a pre-filled message that automatically populates the chat input box when a user opens the link. This reduces the blank-message friction and helps set context for the conversation before it starts. Use it for support ticket prompts, sales inquiries, or event RSVPs.

Telegram Link Not Working? 6 Reasons

If your Telegram link isn't opening correctly, here are the most common causes:

  1. Privacy setting: Phone-based links (t.me/+phone) only work if the recipient's Telegram privacy setting "Who can find me by phone number" is set to "Everybody." If it's set to "My Contacts" or "Nobody," the link will fail silently.
  2. Username typo: Telegram usernames are case-insensitive but must be spelled exactly right. Double-check for extra characters or missing underscores.
  3. Deleted account: If the Telegram user deleted their account, the t.me/username link becomes a dead end.
  4. Banned or removed channel: Telegram removes channels that violate its Terms of Service. If a channel has been banned, its invite link stops working.
  5. Expired or revoked invite link: Group admins can revoke invite links at any time. If the admin generated a new invite, old t.me/+hash links are invalidated.
  6. Regional blocks: In some countries (Iran, China, parts of Russia), ISPs block the t.me domain. Users in these regions need a VPN or Telegram's built-in proxy feature to access t.me links.

Telegram Link with Pre-filled Message - 3 Examples

Adding ?text= to a username-based t.me link pre-fills a draft message when the user opens Telegram. Here are three ready-to-use examples:

  • Customer support: https://t.me/your_support_bot?text=Hi%2C%20I%20need%20help%20with%20my%20order%20%23 - opens a chat with "Hi, I need help with my order #" pre-typed.
  • Sales inquiry: https://t.me/yourusername?text=I%27m%20interested%20in%20your%20services.%20Can%20we%20schedule%20a%20call%3F - great for landing page CTAs.
  • Event RSVP: https://t.me/event_bot?text=I%27d%20like%20to%20RSVP%20for%20the%20July%20meetup - use on flyers and invitations.

Note: The ?text= parameter only works on username-based links (t.me/username), not phone-based links (t.me/+phone). Our generator handles the URL encoding automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Telegram username to create a link?

For username-based links, yes. Set a @username in Telegram Settings → My Profile → Username. For phone-based links, your international phone number is needed, and your Telegram privacy settings ('Who can find me by my phone number' under Privacy and Security) must be set to 'Everybody' for non-contacts to find you. Username links are typically more reliable for business use.

Will this work for Telegram channels and groups?

This tool generates direct message links to individual users or bots via their username or phone number. For public group and channel invite links, use Telegram's built-in "Copy Link" function in your group settings, which generates a t.me/+... URL that you can share directly.

Is this tool free?

Yes. 100% free. No account or sign-up required. All link generation is done in your browser.

What is a t.me link?

t.me is Telegram's official short-link domain. Every Telegram username, public group, channel, and bot has a t.me URL (e.g., t.me/durov). When clicked, it opens the Telegram app directly. Read our full guide: What Is a t.me Link?

Why is my Telegram link not working?

The most common reasons are: (1) a username typo, (2) the privacy setting "Who can find me by phone number" is not set to "Everybody" for phone-based links, (3) the account has been deleted, (4) the group invite link was revoked by an admin, or (5) t.me is blocked in your country. See the troubleshooting section above for details on each case.

Can I add a pre-filled message to my Telegram link?

Yes, but only for username-based links. Add ?text=Your+message to the end of the URL (e.g., t.me/yourusername?text=Hello). This tool generates the encoded URL automatically when you fill in the message field. Pre-filled messages do NOT work with phone-number links.
