What Is a WiFi QR Code?

A WiFi QR code encodes your network name (SSID), password, and security type in a machine-readable format. When scanned, the phone automatically connects to the network - no manual typing of long passwords, no miscommunication, no support requests.

How the WiFi String Works

This tool generates the standard WIFI: URI format that all modern smartphones recognize:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:MyPassword;H:false;;

The parameters are:

  • T: - Security type: WPA (covers WPA2/WPA3), WEP, or nopass (open network)
  • S: - SSID (network name)
  • P: - Password (omitted for open networks)
  • H: - Hidden network flag (true or false)

Special character escaping: This tool automatically escapes semicolons (;), colons (:), and backslashes (\) in your SSID and password. This prevents parsing errors when your password contains these characters - a common bug in other generators.

Best Use Cases

  • Airbnb & vacation rentals: Frame a WiFi QR in the living room so guests connect instantly without asking you for the password.
  • Cafés & restaurants: Print on table tents or receipts - customers scan instead of asking staff.
  • Offices & coworking spaces: Display at reception for visitor WiFi access.
  • Home guest networks: Put a framed QR in the guest bedroom. Visitors connect without you spelling out xK9#mP$2vL.

Best Practices

  • Use WPA2 or WPA3: Never use WEP - it's trivially breakable. Select "WPA" in the tool, which covers WPA2 and WPA3.
  • Test with special characters: If your password contains ;, :, or \, generate the QR and scan it to confirm the connection works correctly.
  • Print at 3 × 3 cm minimum: WiFi QR codes tend to encode more data than URL codes due to password length. Print slightly larger than minimum for reliable scanning.
  • Update when password changes: Static WiFi QR codes have the password embedded - if you change it, you need a new code. Use a dynamic QR code if you rotate passwords regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do WiFi QR codes expire?

No. A static WiFi QR code never expires. However, if you change your WiFi password, the QR code will no longer work because the old password is embedded in the code. You'd need to generate a new one.

Does this work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. iOS 11+ and Android 10+ both support WiFi QR scanning natively through the camera app. Older devices may need a QR scanner app.

Can I use this for a hidden network?

Yes. Toggle the 'Hidden Network' option in the form. The generated QR code includes the hidden SSID flag so the phone knows to connect even if the network doesn't broadcast its name.

What if my password has special characters?

This tool automatically escapes semicolons, colons, and backslashes in your password. These characters have special meaning in the WiFi QR format and must be escaped to prevent parsing errors.

Is this tool free?

Yes. 100% free, no account required. Generate and download WiFi QR codes as PNG instantly. SVG and PDF exports are available on the Pro plan.

What security type should I choose?

Choose WPA for any modern network - it covers WPA2 and WPA3. Only choose WEP if you have legacy hardware that doesn't support WPA (rare). Never use 'None' for a network that should be password-protected.
